Ask a brunchpert

Dear brunchpert,
What are your thoughts on food served in things made out of food? Good for the environment? I think so. Please see examples below.
Meatini
Domino’s Bread Bowl Pasta

First, gross. Definitely O.D. Second, probably not. If you want to get really technical about it, wouldn’t sandwiches and wraps like crepes and breakfast burritos qualify?
For a less repugnant version of food-encased-foods, lest we forget the masa boat a.k.a. sopes, which are fried pieces of ground maize topped with all sorts of delicious — chorizo, eggs, peppers. Yum. You can find sopes for brunch at Mexique, Real Tenochtitlan and Mixteco Grill.
As for the meatini saving the world, wouldn’t count on it. A double product might save washing an extra dish, but it probably doesn’t do much for the carbon footprint and drowning polar bears. ):

I guess this is a slippery slope. All food when you think about it can be eaten without a plate, so then is all food naturally in it’s own container? Is the chicken just a natural bowl for chicken? The potato just a bowl for sour cream? So many questions.

It’s just getting back to the roots of tableware; plates were originally made of stale bread: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trencher_%28tableware%29
