Where to brunch this weekend: Halloween Spooktacular
Ghosts and Goulets, it’s that time of year again when we place our dull lives on hold for one night to live vicariously through the eyes of celebrities, politicians, French maids and other sexy professions. Often, the end result is waking up and looking more like a monster than when you left the house. And what better way to cure said hangover than with some breakfast mash.
If you’re really in a tight spot, here’s a last minute suggestion that is almost entirely effortless: find inspiration from the movie Face/Off. This costume idea works best as a pair, but those going stag can pull it off with a little creativity. Simply emulate your partner the entire evening, or attempt to play John Travolta impersonating Nicolas Cage. And you even have an apt line from Castor Troy: “If you dress like Halloween, ghouls will try to get in your pants.” So true.
Pumped for pumpkins? Here’s where to brunch this weekend:
Saturday, October 31
Nana
(3267 S. Halsted St.; 312.929.2486)
Nana is tricking out a pumpkinpalooza of brunch treats this Halloween. Look for pumpkin pancakes with granola, butter and maple syrup ($8) and pumpkin bread pudding with peanut butter crème anglaise, caramelized bananas and whipped cream ($6). Brunch served 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Rockwood Place
(3466 N. Clark St.; 773.880.2222)
Beyond the dirt cheap price of $10 for all-you-can-eat brunch, the best feature is by far the Count Chocula cereal. Seriously, they still make that? In addition to the usual menu, pumpkin waffles, pumpkin pastries and other seasonal treats will be available. Drink deals include $4 pumpkin pie shots, $4 Sam Adams Octoberfest pints, $3 peach mimosas and a $5 Bloody Mary bar. Brunch served 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Division Ale House
(1942 W. Division St.; 773-384-6886)
Division Ale House is pulling out all the frills for their Halloween brunch, including: witches brew cocktails ($5), pumpkin and pecan pancakes with Granny Smith apple compote ($8) and Mummy dogs with Vampire dip (mini corndogs with spicy ketchup) for $6.25. Halloween brunch served 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; drink specials offered from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 a.m.
Sunday, November 1
LM Le Restaurant
(4539 N. Lincoln Ave.; 773.942.7585)
A weekend full of candy and booze means Halloween will be dead to you by the time Sunday rolls around. LM will be launching brunch this Sunday, with French-themed menu and authentic touches such as French pressed coffee and French newspapers for guests. Looking forward to checking out the LM omelette with Camembert, caramelized shallots and spinach ($10) and brioche French toast with roasted pears, maple syrup and crème chantilly ($10). Added bonus: complimentary croissant or pain chocolat as the breakfast breads du jour. Ooh la la. Starts Sunday, November 1. Brunch served Sat. and Sun., 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Timothy O’Toole’s
(622 N. Fairbanks Ct.; 312.642.0700)
Timothy O’Toole’s will be featuring their weekend brunch and Bears game. Stay and watch the game on the restaurant’s 47 screens with Ultimate Bloody Marys ($5.50) and a bottomless mimosa ($12), or hop Bears (beer) bus to Soldier Field to catch it in real time. Brunch served Sat. and Sun. 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Scarlet Bar
(3320 N. Halsted; 773.348.1053)
This Boystown bar’s slogan, “Because brunch was never really about the food,” rings true every Sunday at their Liquid Brunch. Stroll in late afternoon with last night’s damage and sip on $12 bottles of Champagne, $4 screwdrivers, $4 Bloody Marys or order one of their fantastic martinis — and trust me, they all are. Complimentary cereal and cartoons are available to keep things homey and nostalgic. Brunch served Sun. 1:00-5:00 p.m.
