Misty eyed at the impending closure of Bucktown brunch staple, Vella Cafe? Where one door closes, another must open. In this case, that door belongs to Pannekoeken Cafe, the popular Lincoln Square Dutch pancake house, which is currently expanding with a second location in the former Su-Ra Korean Restaurant space at 2257 W. North Ave. in Wicker Park. As a lazy west sider, I, for one, am thrilled at the brunch expansion that’s taken hold in this neck of the woods. The only downside is the inevitable frowning upon raccoon eyes and the encouragement of strollers.

Where to begin? I had to wait about 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee because they didn’t have any brewed. At a pancake house. On a Saturday morning. Several staff members stood around listlessly, largely unconcerned with such trivial details as the lack of coffee, or messy tables which needed bussing. After close to an hour, stomachs grumbling, we decided to leave after our server told us that there were still two orders ahead of ours in the kitchen. Just because you can make a good pancake does not mean you have any business opening up a restaurant. …not that I would know if they can make a good pancake. My party of four gives it 8 thumbs down.
